Aster solves the mystery of a contrail in the sky

A video of a Louperivoise went viral this November 21 in the early evening. Images captured on Lafontaine Street in Rivière-du-Loup show a linear trail in the sky. The object that precedes it is not visible, which quickly fueled Internet users with theories of all kinds.

Satellite, meteorite, debris, missile, distress signal. Nearly 200 guesses followed in the publication of the citizen of Rivière-du-Loup shared more than 400 times. Other people mentioned having witnessed this phenomenon in particular in Listuguj, an Indian reserve located in the south of Gaspésie and in L’Isle-Verte.

Internet users also pointed out that it was just a plane. One of them, indicating that they had seen it using binoculars and the other indicating that this streak in the sky coincided with the passage of a plane over the region.

Marc-André Paradis, astronomer at the Aster Scientific Interpretation Observatory in Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha!, confirmed this last hypothesis. “It’s quite simply the flight corridor for airliners that pass through our region,” he testified.

“I recognized that right away. This must be the seventh time that the observatory has been approached with this type of photographs and videos,” shares Mr. Paradis. He explains that hot gases and water vapor are escaping from the plane.

At this altitude, the air is much colder. Thus, the water vapor condenses on contact, creating a line of clouds. “It’s curious, because we don’t see an object in front of this vaporous trail which is moving, which is growing, which is lengthening, but there is definitely a plane. It’s completely artificial and human,” maintains Marc-André Paradis.

Despite the quality of the video, he managed to distinguish two vaporous trails, which means that the plane in question is equipped with at least two jet engines. Mr. Paradis also notes that a flight corridor to Quebec and Montreal is located just above the region.

He took the opportunity to inform that in the event of a meteorite entering the atmosphere, a trail of humidity might also have been visible, but that at this altitude an explosion sound would have been heard.

“It’s like backfires, because the meteor is going much faster than the speed of sound, so it shatters it,” he concludes.

So, despite the mysterious aspect of the video, no unusual natural phenomenon occurred. However, Lower Laurentians will not be left out, because in a little over four months, more precisely on April 8, 2024, they will be able to witness a total solar eclipse which will be 97% visible in the region.
