Astarion the Vampire has rare voice lines if you nuke him with a Sunbeam.

We’re gonna find this stuff for years, aren’t we?

We all know by now that Baldur’s Gate 3 is a huge game, but weeks after its release, I’m still amazed not just by how much good stuff I’ve seen, but also by how much good stuff I’ve found. . lack. That it’s so easy to pick up dialogue or take routes that lock down whole swaths of the game, including the stories of the six main companions, is a testament to Larian’s confidence in the breadth of his stories.

Note: Act 1 spoilers below.

For me it was the Githyanki Creche. By taking this path, I apparently missed the chance to witness that rare moment when Astarion is Astarion, as user gokkyun shared on the BG3 subreddit.

“I didn’t have the opportunity to witness this scene, but I was lucky enough to witness a rare moment of Astarion as Astarion. just there! Astarion yells with justified indignation.

all of Astarion’s reactions to the Sun Lance death of r/BaldursGate3

I learn that the exchange is about choosing to activate the Sunspear at the end of the Githyanki Creche story. I don’t know the details, but it’s apparently possible to disable the massive superweapon, or at least put your companions out of harm’s way. Since this was redditor gokkyun’s second time through the Crib, they decided to see what would happen if they let our favorite bloodsucker die in action and then brought him back. He is very angry, which is not surprising.

” The next time ? No no no, if there is a ‘next time’, it is I who will point the almighty weapon, ”he continues. “I appreciate you trying to fix your mistake, but don’t do it again!” »

The quotes don’t really do the humor of the scene justice: Astarion actor Neil Newbon plays it with the perfect amount of rage and contempt for a best friend who carelessly hurt you, and the motion capture Larian’s expressiveness matches his warmth throughout the scene. I’m not sure I would ever have had the heart to have my vampire friend killed on purpose, so I’m glad someone shared this moment. BG3 is easy to play to the point that its role-playing quality becomes ordinary, but dive into another big-budget RPG and you’ll find that many games are well-written, offer meaningful choices, and look great, but that very few have all these qualities at the same time.

I’m starting to regret not taking the pass to the manger in Act 1. No disrespect to the Underdark, this Sunspear story sounds pretty cool. Apparently there’s nothing stopping you from backtracking to explore both areas during the same playthrough, you just need to make sure you’re not continuing into the Act 2 area before doing so.
