Abilumi (Brazilian Association of Manufacturers and/or Importers of Lighting Products) gathered some of the main questions regarding LED lighting, applications and advantages, to support the public in choosing the product that best suits their needs.
LED lamps, if used according to the manufacturer’s instructions, unlike other technologies, and thanks to their versatility, can be used in a variety of applications, such as car headlights, public roads, swimming pools, homes, facades and even clothing.
As for durability, certified LED lamps, those with the Inmetro seal, were made to last around 25,000 hours, with an average daily use of 3.5 hours. “The evolution of LED lamp technology, as well as cell phones, appliances and televisions, makes them more efficient every year, incorporating more benefits. So, for the consumer to enjoy them, upgrades must be made whenever possible”, says Rubens Rosado, electrical engineer and technical advisor at Abilumi.
When purchasing products, it is important to pay attention to luminous efficiency, a parameter used to find out how much energy a particular light source, luminaire or lamp consumes to produce the amount of light it is intended for. “A higher efficiency value means that the lamp is expending less energy to produce light, which is good for the consumer’s pocket”, guides Rosado. “Luminous flux is how much light a source, whether a lamp or lamp, produces when turned on. It is measured in lumens. The greater the number of lumens, the greater the light output of a lamp.”
How to know if an LED lamp is within quality and safety standards? According to the engineer, the best way is for consumers to check whether the lamp has Inmetro certification. It is advisable to be wary of unknown and very cheap brands, as they may have fake stamps.
A recurring consumer doubt refers to the color temperature. “This is a very personal choice, but experience shows that in environments where more dynamism is desired, higher color temperatures should be used, between 5,000K and 6,500K on the Kelvin scale. This is the case of service areas, laundries, garages and workshops”, says Abilumi’s technical advisor.
In environments such as offices, kitchens and bathrooms, it is recommended to use color temperatures around 4,000K. In environments where we want to relax, such as bedrooms and living rooms, the ideal are lamps with a color temperature around 2,700K.
Another topic that raises doubts is the equivalence, when replacing lamps of previous technologies with LEDs. The consumer can consult the Abilumi Equivalence Table the column referring to the technology of the lamp to be replaced, then go to its power and compare it with the power of the LED lamp, which is on the same line. “As an example, if the installation had a 50W incandescent lamp, it is possible to replace it with a 5W LED. In the case of a compact 18W, it is advantageous to replace it with a 10W LED”, he advises.
Finally, it is possible to report poor quality or counterfeit lighting products. Inmetro has an ombudsman service that monitors products that cause harm to consumers and their facilities. As soon as the consumer detects a fraud, he must contact us. Just send a message with as much information as you have, such as store name, purchase date, etc. Inmetro provides a channel for complaints at this link:
