Strokes killed more than 6 million people worldwide in 2019.

Early symptoms of strokes include sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body, confusion, and difficulty speaking.

However, there may be another surprising sign of a stroke, which you may experience upon waking in the morning, according to bestlifeonline.

Strokes have two main causes: blockage of an artery (ischemic stroke) or a leaking or bursting of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke).

The most common type is an ischemic stroke, which occurs when blood vessels in the brain become narrowed or blocked, resulting in a severe reduction in blood flow. In a hemorrhagic stroke, a blood vessel in the brain ruptures, causing it to leak.

Not only do strokes occur in the brain, but another type of stroke, called retinal artery occlusion, occurs in the eye, also known as an eye clot.

American heart surgeon Alan Stewart explains that strokes that occur in the brain lead to weakness, slurred speech, and loss of consciousness.

Stewart added that this also occurs in the eye, which leads to a loss of blood flow to the retina.

The American heart surgeon notes that when blood flow is disrupted, immediate vision loss occurs.

Many different types of changes in vision indicate different health conditions that you may not necessarily associate with the eyes.

For example, blurry vision is a warning sign of multiple sclerosis, and decreased peripheral vision indicates the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

“Symptoms of a stroke can appear to be fairly benign, such as tiny floaters in the eye, which means there are small areas of floating black, but loss of vision in the morning is another symptom of a stroke,” Stewart continued.

So if you wake up in the morning and find your vision impaired, you should consult a doctor immediately.

It is important to realize that when the problem is due to a stroke, symptoms appear in only one eye.

Other types of vision changes indicate a stroke.

Most people with a stroke also notice loss of vision in one eye when they wake up in the morning without pain.

According to the American Heart Association, vision loss at any time of the day or night is cause for concern.
