A commitment on several fronts

Along with sports, Assmaa Niang was a military firefighter in Paris from 2005, for ten years. The only woman in her barracks, her guards took a lot of energy from her, which was not easy to maintain her level on the tatami mats.

At the end of 2011, following her bronze medal at the French 1st division Championships in -70 kg, she was spotted by Baptist Leroy, in charge of Moroccans residing abroad with the Royal Moroccan Judo Federation. Very quickly, their common interests allowed Assmaa Niang to obtain her first cape in the red and green colors. The beginning of a long adventure strewn with pitfalls and titles. At the same time, she was able to maintain some training at INSEP to keep the link with the French tatami mats.

The one who marveled at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 saying ” I want to do the games realized his dream at the Rio Games, 20 years later. Then once more in Tokyo in 2021.

Her unfailing perseverance led her to found her coaching company in 2016, Mind Over Matterspecializing in physical and mental preparation.

Today a psychotherapist and lecturer, Assmaa Niang is inspired by Kintsugi in its personal development support approach. Thanks to this “ancestral Japanese art which consists of repairing a broken object by highlighting its cracks with gold rather than trying to make them invisible, the object then becomes unique and even more beautiful and precious than before”, explains does she on his professional website.

“I believe that every human being […] can sublimate its wounds and fill its flaws to become stronger, wiser and freer. »

After his silver medal at theOpen the Rome 2023, Assmaa Niang will be all the more determined on the Moroccan tatami mats to aim for a sixth continental title and score valuable points for Olympic qualification. To do so, she will first have to face the 19-year-old Kenyan Mary Man5th in African Junior Championships this year, to hope to meet the Senegalese in the second round Khadija Sonkowinner of theOpen d’Abidjan in June 2023.
