Vladimir Putin today put into effect a law aimed at confiscating the money and assets of people found guilty of spreading false information regarding the Russian military, a fresh sign of a crackdown targeting Kremlin critics two years following launching his attack on Ukraine.
Moscow made it illegal to criticize the military shortly following it launched its attack on Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
The new text that entered into force today was voted at the end of January by the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian Parliament, and at the beginning of February by the Federation Council, the upper house.
Today, as expected, the presidential decree bearing his signature Vladimir Putin published by the Russian authorities.
During his presentation in the Duma, the president of the body, Vychislav Volodin, had said that this law once morest malicious elements would allow the punishment of traitors who act once morest their country.
In fact the law does not necessarily provide for the confiscation of all the assets of a convicted person but for the confiscation of money and funds used or intended to finance criminal activities, terms that remain however very vague.
According to the protothema, it also provides that the judiciary will be able to remove all state honors awarded to people convicted of false information.
The charge of spreading false information regarding the Russian military carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. Hundreds of Russians have been convicted under this article of the Criminal Code for almost two years.
