Assessments of Business Leaders in Various Sectors for the 3rd Quarter of 2023: Manufacturing, Extractive, Energy, Environmental, and Construction Industries

The High Commission for Planning (HCP) recently presented the main assessments of business leaders, taken from business surveys carried out by the organization for the third quarter of 2023 among companies operating in various sectors, notably industry and construction.

These assessments published in a recent HCP note concern the evolution of activity during the 2nd quarter of 2023 and the forecasts for the 3rd quarter of this year. The details.

Manufacturing industry

In the 2nd quarter of 2023, production in the manufacturing industry would have recorded an increase, due to an increase in production in the branches of “Food industry”, “Manufacture of metal products, with the exception of machines and equipment” as well as “Manufacture of electrical equipment”. On the other hand, a drop in production was observed in the “Automotive industry” and “Paper and cardboard industry” branches.

Order books in this sector are considered to be at a normal level according to business leaders. Regarding employment, he would have experienced stability. Overall, the production capacity utilization rate (TUC) in the manufacturing industry would have been 76%.

During the same period, around 31% of companies in the manufacturing industry encountered difficulties in sourcing raw materials, mainly those of foreign origin.

As for stocks of raw materials, they would have remained at a normal level, while cash flow would have been described as “difficult” by 23% of business leaders. This proportion reaches nearly 27% in the “Food industries” sector.

For the 3rd quarter, companies in the manufacturing industry expect stability in their production. These expectations would be attributable, on the one hand, to an increase in the activity of “Metallurgy” and the “Food industry” and, on the other hand, to a decrease in that of the “Manufacture of other products non-metallic minerals”, the “Chemical industry” and the “Automotive industry”.

Regarding employment expectations, manufacturers generally expect stability in the number of employees.

Industrie extractive

During the 2nd quarter, production in the extractive industry recorded an increase, mainly due to an increase in phosphate production. However, the selling prices of products in this sector would have seen a decrease, and employment would also have recorded a drop.

Companies in this sector are forecasting an increase in their production for the 3rd quarter of 2023. This development would be mainly attributable to an increase in the production of phosphates. In terms of numbers employed, bosses in this sector anticipate a decrease.

Energy industry

As for the 3rd quarter of 2023, business leaders in the construction sector anticipate an increase in activity. This would be due to the forecast of an increase in the field of “Civil Engineering” and a stagnation in the branch of “Building Construction”. The number of employees should, for their part, remain stable.
