Asuncion, IP Agency.- The special assembly of Jehovah’s Witnesses, which concluded yesterday in Asunción, was attended by some 20,000 people, who moved nearly 4 million dollars within the local economy, reported the director of Meeting Tourism of Senatur, Victor Chamorro.
“More than 20,000 people arrived from different parts of the world, 2,000 arrived by plane from distant points, and 45 buses with a capacity of 60 people each came from within the country, as well as people who arrived in their own vehicles,” Chamorro reported when describing the movement generated by the activity in the Paraguayan capital.
The special assembly took place from Friday and concluded yesterday, Sunday, at the La Nueva Olla stadium in Asunción. Participants from abroad arrived several days before the event and are leaving the country again throughout this week, Chamorro said.
The Director of Meetings Tourism stressed that this event was very important for the national economy, and as proof he acknowledged that the hotels in the capital were full to their accommodation capacity.
According to reference values, a meeting tourist from abroad spends approximately 354 dollars per night, while a domestic tourist spends 178 dollars.
“They estimated that the event generated approximately $4 million,” Chamorro said, referring to preliminary figures reported by Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Ulises Lesme, official spokesman for Jehovah’s Witnesses, said that the 2,000 delegates who came to Paraguay for this special assembly came mainly from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the United States, Great Britain, Colombia, Japan and Spain.
He said that these delegates will stay in the country for 10 days, holding several meetings, visiting tourist sites and using hotels and restaurants.
The assembly of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Asunción was one of the 14 cities where these meetings were held simultaneously.
The success of these major mass events “is the result of a well-coordinated and well-planned organisation, with the participation of several institutions,” said the director of Meetings Tourism.
“For this event, several inter-institutional meetings were held, where various public service actors were convened, such as Customs, Immigration, Traffic Police, National Police, which contributes to the success of this type of event,” he added.
Other massive events on the horizon
Another massive event that several institutions, coordinated by the National Secretariat of Tourism, are already working on organizing is the final of the Copa Sudamericana, which will take place in Asunción on November 23, Chamorro said.
An inter-institutional committee has also been working for several months for the 2025 World Rally in Itapúa, which expects the participation of between 150,000 and 200,000 people.
In this regard, work is being done primarily to create accommodation establishments that will increase the department’s tourist reception capacity.
He indicated that there are currently between 5,000 and 6,000 beds registered in regular establishments in Itapúa and that the intention is to at least double that number.
“We are formalizing accommodation establishments to integrate them into the formal offer, we intend to at least double that in terms of beds and accommodation places,” Chamorro said.
