The political leader Pedro Briones, who is part of Revolución Ciudadana, the space of Rafael Correa, was assassinated this Monday with two bullet wounds in the Ecuadorian city of Esmeraldas.
The Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo quoted police sources assuring that Briones was murdered in the San Mateo parish park, where he was approached by two people who were traveling on a motorcycle and shot twice.
According to El Universo, Briones was then taken to the Delfina Torres de Concha General Hospital, where doctors confirmed that he no longer had vital signs.
For their part, several leaders of the group that reports to the former president, who also expressed himself on social networks, condemned the act: “They murdered another of our comrades in Esmeraldas. Stop!”.

The Correísta presidential candidate, Luisa González, posted a message on her Twitter account: “Ecuador is living its bloodiest time. We owe this to the total abandonment of an inept government and a state taken over by mafias. My solidarity hug to the family of comrade Pedro Briones, who fell into the hands of violence. Change is urgent!”
Meanwhile, the Mayor’s Office of Esmeraldas also regretted the fact: “Extremely dismayed by the death of the Parish Director of San Mateo, Pedro Briones, we express our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.”
Villavicencio was assassinated on Wednesday by alleged Colombian hitmen who shot him when he got into his vehicle after participating in an electoral rally.
A few days before, he had denounced death threats allegedly from “Fito”, identified by the authorities as the leader of Los Choneros, one of the main criminal gangs operating in Ecuador.
