Assaí reinforces trans visibility and brings stories of collaborators

Federal District, January 2023– Today, January 29, is Trans Visibility Day. The date, created in 2004, symbolizes the struggle for inclusion and respect for trans people and is a milestone for Assaí Atacadista. The Company, one of the largest private employers in Brazil, has invested in diversity and inclusion actions, contributing to an increasingly plural environment that reflects society.

Collaborator Mayara Moura is an example. Born in Brasília, she works as a cashier and made her transition at the age of 23. Her twin brother, Roberio Moura, encouraged the professional to work at the Company, after being unemployed for more than a year. “After more than a year out of the job market, my twin brother, who is homosexual, showed me a vacancy at Assaí and, with no expectations of joining the company, I looked into the matter further and that’s when I realized that the Company has a broad program of Diversity and Inclusion, which motivated my candidacy. A good surprise was that the selection process took place through the Gupy platform, completely virtual, giving even more security, as we are often judged by appearance, even creating a barrier to continue with the selection process. The HR team was incredible, I noticed in their actions all the care with diversity and inclusion. I believe that many doors are being opened for other trans people in the job market,” she says.

Mayara also emphasizes the difficulty of accepting the family and the transition process. “It took me a while to assume my transsexuality for fear, apprehension, precepts and family values, but I already had a whole identity that I hid. It was at the age of 23 that I managed to make the whole transition process and my brother was essential in this process, he always gave me a lot of support ”, she recalls. The employee also reinforces the importance of having a safe work environment. “At the beginning of my professional career, I felt a lot of prejudice in relation to my clothes. I believe that empathy, respect and inclusion make all the difference and working at Assaí means valuing these pillars, especially in terms of feeling protected in your job”, she adds.

Like Mayara, Natalia Ribeiro, also a cashier, from Brasília, saw the possibility of a formal job at a company the size of Assaí as an opportunity for growth and recognition against prejudice. “At the beginning of my professional career, I joined a third-party company and was not accepted by some employees. I needed to show and prove the value of my work. After a period, I participated in a selection process to be a collaborator at Assaí, I registered with Gupy and I felt very welcomed. I started as a Cashier and currently I support Customer Service. This professional growth is motivating and makes me feel very safe. I say that Assaí embraces all diversity and is a company that is concerned with making a difference”, she emphasizes.

Respect, inclusion and plurality are fundamental pillars of Assaí, which through the Diversity Program guide several internal and external initiatives at the Company. Among the actions, the highlight is the partnership with TransEmpregos, which connects professionals to the job market; Sponsorship of the DiverS/A Fair, which aims to connect young LGBTQIA+ professionals to companies and leaders who want more diverse teams; and Adherence to the Forum of Companies and LGBTI+ Rights, which brings together more than 100 companies to encourage respect and promotion of LGBTQIA+ human rights in society and in the Brazilian business environment.
