Russian world number 121 Aslan Karatsev reached today, Tuesday, the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open tennis tournament, following defeating his compatriot, world number 3 Daniel Medvedev, in a match that lasted for one hour and 35 minutes.
The first group witnessed intense competition between Karatsev and Medvedev, before the first succeeded in winning it 7-6 (7-1), and Karatsev qualified in the second group, which he excelled by (6-4).
With this victory, Karatsev reached the quarter-finals in a clay court tournament for the first time in his career, while Medvedev failed to reach this role for the fourth year in a row.
In the quarter-finals of the Madrid Championship, Karatsev will face the winner of the American Taylor Fritz match and the Chinese Chenshen Zhang.
