A global study shows that our mental health starts to deteriorate after just two hours of continuous work at a desk, but 15 minutes of exercise can be enough to counter the effects.

As World Mental Health Day approaches, on October 10, ASICS called on actor Brian Cox who in an impactful video which warns of the harmful effects of sitting for too long at one’s desk and invites people to move, get up regularly to preserve your mental health.

The experience The Desk Breaksupervised by Dr Brendon Stubbs of King’s College London, found that when people who worked while sitting behind their desk added just 15 minutes of physical activity to their working day, their mental state improved by 22.5%. and their assessment of their state of mind increases from 62/100 to 76/100 in feeling.

The experiment also showed that focusing on taking a break or several short breaks daily at the office for just one week reduced stress levels by 14.7%, increased productivity by 33.2% and improved productivity. concentration of 28.6%. Participants reported feeling 33.3% more relaxed and 28.6% more calm and resilient. 79.2% of participants said they would be more dedicated to their work if they could take breaks more regularly.

A previous ASICS global study, State of Mind, which involved 26,000 people, found a strong link between sedentary behavior and mental well-being, with scores in that study decreasing the longer people remained inactive.

Other research on people working seated shows that after just two hours of uninterrupted work, mental wellbeing scores start to drop and stress levels increase. After four hours of uninterrupted work, stress levels increase by 18%. ASICS’ new The Desk Break experiment shows that just 15 minutes of mobility can help reverse the effects of this phenomenon.

In this new spot proposed by ASICS, Brian Cox plays the role of a despotic boss to accentuate the phenomenon and emphasize the danger that weighs on our mental health: the desk behind which we work every day. This video invites, under a humorous and offbeat cover, people to take short breaks, get up, walk, move around during working hours to preserve their mental health.
