Japan and Thailand are two of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia. But figures suggest a sharp decline in the number of Chinese tourists traveling here as safety concerns rise among younger travellers. Chinese tourists flocked to both countries earlier this year, but by the third quarter, Thailand had slipped to 6th place and Japan to 8th place, according to a report by marketing company China Trading Desk.

For Japan, food security is a concern. The release of radioactive waste water from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean in August is a source of fear for the Chinese. The World Health Organization and other safety groups have said seafood from Japan is safe to eat, but food safety-conscious Chinese are reluctant to believe it.

In Thailand, however, the Chinese are held back by the fear of being scammed. The depiction of Thailand’s black face in many films has created fear among Chinese tourists. Tourists are victims of scams and robbery in lawless border regions. In addition, many transnational crime groups involved in activities such as drug and gambling, human trafficking and illegal wildlife sales remain a nightmare. Also, there are fake companies that extort money etc by promising to provide work.

The movie “No More Bets” which depicted crime and other things in Thailand also had a big impact on tourists. The film has grossed nearly $500 million in Chinese theaters through early September. The film is made in such a way as to create fear that traveling to Thailand may even endanger one’s life. Neighboring Cambodia subsequently banned “No More Bets” from theaters.

As of September, fewer than 2.5 million Chinese nationals visited Thailand, according to Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports. 5 million Chinese are expected to arrive this year. In 2019, regarding 11 million Chinese travelers visited Thailand before Covid. Currently, Thailand ranks behind South Korea, Malaysia and Australia in terms of Chinese tourist arrivals. According to a report by China Trading Desk, Singapore is considered to be the safest travel destination in 2023.
