Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games 2024 Cancelled Due to Host City Contract Issues

Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games slated for November 2024 officially cancelled.

AKIPRESS.COM – The Olympic Council of Asia has officially announced the cancellation of the 6th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, originally set to take place in Bangkok and Chonburi. This decision was made after the AIMAG Organising Committee failed to fulfill critical criteria outlined in the Host City Contract before the final deadline of August 19, 2024, at 17:00 Bangkok time, the OCA confirmed.

During the 43rd OCA General Assembly in Bangkok last May, the AIMAG Organising Committee had presented an optimistic progress report that included a commitment to meet all necessary requirements in accordance with the Host City contract by July 2024.

In response to growing concerns, an emergency meeting on August 15, 2024, brought together the OCA Executive Board, which collectively reached a unanimous decision to cancel the Games unless the AIMAG Organising Committee could fulfill nine specific conditions deemed essential for the event’s successful hosting by the impending deadline. With those requirements not met in time, the OCA was left with no alternative but to officially cancel the sporting event.

The OCA extends its deepest sympathies to the athletes who were eagerly anticipating their participation in the AIMAG and acknowledges the profound ramifications this cancellation will have on them and their preparations. Despite the OCA’s concerted efforts to facilitate the Games’ smooth execution, it became evident that proceeding with the event was unfeasible, prompting the OCA to prioritize the interests of the athletes and all involved parties. To ensure adequate support for the athletes, the OCA intends to coordinate with the respective National Olympic Committees (NOCs).

The OCA Executive Board has also resolved that Thailand may apply through the standard procedure to host the AIMAG in the future, following the next edition of the Games scheduled to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2026.

The 6th AIMAG was originally planned for November 21-30, 2024, but had been postponed multiple times due to the Covid pandemic, coupled with political changes in Thailand.
