HUNDRED senior golfers in Southeast Asia will gather in Bandung for a tournament entitled The Star Energy CASGA Golf Tournament on 7-8 May. Indonesia, through the Indonesian Senior Golfers Association (Perpesi), is hosting the Confederations of ASEAN Senior Golfers Associations (CASGA) event.

A total of 128 senior golfers, aka those aged over 55 years, will enliven the agenda which is scheduled to be held at two courses, namely Jatinangor National Golf & Resort and Parahyangan Golf Club. Apart from Indonesia, participants came from Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia.

Perpesi President Masrizal A Syarief said that the event was an opportunity to promote tourism as well as to build networks.

The reason is that most of the senior golfers are businessmen, retired state officials and influential private individuals in their respective countries.

“This activity is also to build networks among the ASEAN community and build communication not only related to golf but also other fields,” said Masrizal at a press conference at Pondok Indah Golf, Jakarta, Monday (1/4).

Perpesi chose two locations in Bandung to promote golf destinations other than Jakarta and Bali. Apart from the tournament, the CASGA Intermediate General Meeting will also be held.

The participants and spouses who attended were planned to arrive in Jakarta and then go to Bandung using the Whoosh fast train. The return journey will also use the fast train.

Chairman of the Perpesi Advisory Council, Peter F Gontha, said that the use of Whoosh as a participant’s mode of transportation was deliberately chosen to show Indonesia’s progress in having the first high-speed train in Southeast Asia.

“What we want to show is Indonesian tourism. We are the first country to have a fast train in ASEAN and we also want to be proud of that,” said Peter.

Peter views the golf event as an opportunity to further strengthen relations between society and the business world in ASEAN. Apart from that, added Peter, the tournament is also to introduce Bandung as a golf paradise that is not widely known.

This event also received support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a means of strengthening relations between neighbors in Southeast Asia.

“We consider this event important for carrying out networking. The participants are senior businessmen, former ministers, king’s aides, colonels, generals, and so on,” said Peter.

“What is important is that businessmen and officials have an intimate relationship because ultimately this relationship will fight for togetherness among ASEAN countries,” he said. (Dhk/Z-7)
