ASEAN acclaimed as a model of regional organization? – Today Morocco

Morocco being very sensitive to the issue of security, the debate is essential ipso facto.

Debate
The workshop organized jointly by the ESCA School of Management and Atlantis, the Center for Research and Strategic Studies, will have made it possible to create the debate with a panel of participants representing several African and Asian countries.

The theme “ASEAN as a model of regional organization” retained was oriented towards four axes. The first provided an overview of the organization itself, which was created in 1967. The regional model was presented. The challenges and successes of the organization and its response in times of crisis too. Finally, the economic and commercial imperatives of ASEAN as a regional organization were presented and moderated by Driss Benomar, president of the Center, and Thami Ghorfi, president of ESCA Ecole de Management.

As a reminder, ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) was founded by five states from maritime Southeast Asia: the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. They were joined by Brunei in 1984, Vietnam in 1995, Laos and Burma (current Myanmar) in 1997 and Cambodia in 1999.

Created during the Cold War to counter communist movements, promote growth and development and ensure stability in the region, this association aims to strengthen cooperation and mutual assistance between its members. It also makes it possible to provide a space for settling regional problems and operating arbitrations during international negotiations. The Islamic counter-terrorism issue remains a priority in its own right for the NGO. This determining axis will have emerged following the attacks of September 11, 2001 and remains determining today for all its members. ASEAN had signed three anti-terrorism agreements with China, Japan and the United States. A summit is organized each year in November and its general secretariat is located in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Moreover, Driss Benomar, a fine connoisseur of security issues in the world, had already succeeded, in October 2015, in bringing together international experts from around the world during the first edition of the Africa Security Forum, an event dedicated to safety and security in the African continent.

Industrial security, cyber defense and strategic intelligence are, in fact, as many themes as Morocco lists in its short and medium term agenda. The former leader of the international cell of the Ministry of the Interior of Morocco in the 1990s intends to raise awareness of the challenges of adopting reliable models both in terms of security and in terms of cooperation between the countries of Africa and from Asia. The event organized today with ESCA’s geopolitics and geo-economics research group is a perfect demonstration of this.
