“As if we had passed the vine through a toaster”: why mildew is wreaking havoc in Bordeaux

Crumbled leaves, desiccated grapes: “It’s as if the vine had been put through a toaster”, sums up Joël Ortiz. Wine advisor to the Gironde Chamber of Agriculture for twenty years, he assures her, “this is the first season that we have seen so much mildew in Bordeaux. With 100 millimeters of rainfall in June, compared to 70 on average over the past thirty years, combined with the heat, the mushroom benefited from the “tropical climate” which reigned over the South-West and reached 90% of the Bordeaux vineyards. It develops its spores on the foliage before attacking the berries, drying them out.
