Pneumonia is an acute inflammatory disease that affects the lungs. It can be caused by infection with different microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria and fungi.
“The elderly are more fragile and prone to developing pneumonia because they generally have some associated comorbidity, such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension and smoking”, explained pulmonologist Gilda Elizabeth da Fonseca, doctor at Hospital Brasília Unit Águas Claras, in an interview prior to the Metropolises.
Symptoms of pneumonia
The first symptoms of pneumonia are similar to those of a common flu. They include:
High fever; Dry cough or phlegm; Shortness of breath and chest pain; Mental confusion; Headache; Body pain; Chills; Loss of appetite.
“Lung impairment caused by pneumococcus can lead to respiratory failure. The lungs become ill and are unable to exchange gases properly. If it is not treated, it can be fatal”, explained infectious disease specialist Eliana Bicudo, from the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases in DF, in an interview prior to the Metropolises.
Diagnosis and treatment
The diagnosis of pneumonia is made by evaluating the patient’s history, including the previous occurrence of other illnesses related to the respiratory tract.
Along with this, the doctor performs clinical examinations, listening to the lungs to track sounds that suggest the incidence of pneumonia. If the disease is suspected, a lung x-ray can be performed, which allows confirmation and determination of the location and extent of the infection.
Treatment for pneumonia varies depending on the cause of the infection and the severity of the condition. It usually involves the use of antibiotic or antiviral medications and, in more severe cases, the use of oxygen and respiratory physiotherapy.
