Arrested for theft from safe deposit boxes, Artur Barbynets’ luck failed him at the decisive moment. On paper, he is still his own talent, but it is clear that in reality he was not alone.

The case of the theft of more than a billion rubles from RosDorBank on Michurinskaya Street in St. Petersburg might be news for, say, the next month, or even a year, when the traces of the villain would have long been covered. But a native of the Krasnodar Territory, Artur Barbynets, was detained at Sochi airport, and the owners of the money can exhale a little: at least part of the stolen property has survived, and maybe everything will be found.

The victim in the case of particularly large theft came to the RosDorBank vault for the first time on March 12. He put 250 thousand dollars and 30 thousand euros in the cell. The next day he came either to pick him up or to report. And I saw a gaping emptiness.

As the bank describes, the storage facility on Michurinskaya is automated and 24/7. The point is that clients are not met there by a special person with special keys and the authority to check the passport photo with the face of the cell tenant. The depository was opened in 2011 and included a storage facility for valuables of the highest category of fortification. The bank boasted that it contained equipment from the Gunnebo company – the Swedish concern made the personal safe for Emperor Nicholas II, and at the end of the last century took upon itself the responsibility of protecting the crown of Elizabeth II. “Each cell has a mechanical lock, which can only be opened by the client with his own key. The control system provides access to the deposit box using a bank magnetic card and entering a PIN code. As an additional means of identification, a device is used to identify the client using biometric indicators – palm and fingerprints of the right hand,” the bank’s website said 13 years ago. Fontanka has not yet been able to find out whether anything has changed in the system today: the bank’s press service did not answer calls.

Barbynets, apparently, might bypass all levels of protection; the PIN code remained the problem. As he tells investigators, he managed to install a micro-camera in the storage room, which some clients used to demonstrate which numbers should be pointed at.

Naturally, following the first theft was discovered, the cells were subjected to an “inventory.” It quickly became clear that another safe was missing 200 thousand dollars, and someone’s precious stones were missing. In total, writes Daria Lebedeva from the joint press service of the courts of St. Petersburg, a billion and almost 65 million rubles were stolen.

Barbynets was detained at Sochi airport on March 16. It is known that he has Moldovan citizenship and it seems that somewhere in Chisinau a child and a pregnant wife are waiting for him. Considering that visually all the cells were intact, Barbynets might now spend time with his family somewhere as far as possible from Russian justice – following all, the first victim might return to his cell not the next day, but any time, even in a year.

In the case materials, it was first recorded that Barbynets acted alone. But it is clear that the scam has beneficiaries. Now the suspect did not take the money with him, but left almost everything in a rented apartment on 8 March Street in Lyubertsy – stones, 4.5 million euros, almost a million dollars and regarding 20 million in rubles were found there.

“According to the man, the masterminds of the crime were his acquaintances, who provided all the necessary information to penetrate the depository. Now law enforcement officers are identifying the suspect’s accomplices,” said official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Irina Volk.

The arrested man, apparently, either decided to steal for the first time, or was caught for the first time. There is no data regarding him in either the Russian or Moldovan judicial databases.

PS: Representatives of RosDorBank, in a conversation with Fontanka, confirmed the information regarding the reliability of the safe protection mentioned on the bank’s website.
