It is the mirror, which this time becomes a symbol of inspiration and reference for ten important contemporary artists, nine painters and a sculptor, who are exhibiting their creations at the Argo gallery from February 29.
In an abstract and completely personal way, each of these ten visual artists stand in front of a mirror, a broken one in fact, and present their work in the new exhibition that has the eloquent title “Broken Mirror” and opens at the Argo gallery, without preconceptions and prejudices on the day which comes every four years (February 29).

They confront their idol, making their work a reflection of their inner self. Even when the image is fragmented, art is there to multiply reflections, to offer more levels, other dimensions, new readings and routes to unexplored horizons.

The artists Adrianos, Dorothea Amenda, Costas Varotsos, Christi Grigoriou, Juliano Kaglis, Evita Kanellou, Katerina Mavroleon, Vangelis Rinas, Katerina Ribatsiou, Mara Tsafantakis, who work from the “inside” to the outside, explore the boundaries both of their personal world as well as the world that surrounds them, a threatening world that is constantly changing at breakneck speed.

“Six women and four men, co-exhibit inspired by the almost transcendental symbol of the mirror. And even the broken one. Of that which reflects and that which absorbs or distorts”, writes the art historian Manos Stefanidis who forewords the exhibition. “Ten, contemporary creators who express their concerns regarding our ambiguous and very interesting era, try to give, each one differently, their own version of the broken mirror, of the inverted reality that we artists and the public experience. Balancing between abstraction and representation, free gesture and the small, elegant touch, diving into the subconscious and the suspicious gaze at a reality that is never one-dimensional.”
CHRISTI GREGORIOU DOROTHEA AMENTA
Bearing in mind that every work of art, let’s say a painting, in the most common cases is an image, a “story” expressed in a visual language. In special cases, however, disclosure is made. Because behind every narrative, even the simplest one, there is always a thought, a reasoning. In rarer, and therefore far more important, moments the work of art functions as if it were an oracle, an enigma or a prophecy. And that is why we must approach it in a similar way. Like an oracle or a riddle. With humility, awe and devotion. With the eyes of a pilgrim and the soul of a believer. Let (him) be left so that he is also allowed to function. To speak to us with his spoken language. To see us as we see it. Let’s see through the meaningful, broken mirror…”, concludes Manos Stefanidis.
