As several German media, including the “Kölner Stadtanzeiger” and the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, unanimously report, the artistic director of the Wiener Volkstheater will take over the management of the Cologne theater from the 2025/26 season.

Officially, the 51-year-old is to be presented next week as the successor to the outgoing Cologne director Stefan Bachmann, who in turn will move to the Burgtheater in Vienna next season and succeed Martin Kusej there. Until Voges takes over, the Cologne drama will be directed by director Rafael Sanchez on an interim basis.

Voges took over the Volkstheater during its general renovation and during the difficult 2020/21 CoV season. Under his direction, the house was invited to the renowned Berlin Theatertreffen for the first time since 1970 in 2022 with Claudia Bauer’s production of “humanistää!”, where it was awarded two prizes. In the same year, four Nestroys went to the Volkstheater – for best director, best actor, best supporting role and for best performance in the German-speaking world.
