In the following report, Al-Consulto reviews the causes, symptoms, and treatment of rapid heartbeat in the elderly, according to WebMD.
Causes of rapid heartbeat in the elderly
1- Excessive obesity
Older people become more susceptible to developing atrial fibrillation if they are obese, because being overweight puts great pressure on heart health, as it leads to an irregular heartbeat.
2- Diabetes
Atrial fibrillation is a tolerable complication of type 2 diabetes in the elderly, because high blood sugar leads to an irregular heartbeat.
3- Obstructive sleep apnea
The risk of atrial fibrillation increases in elderly people who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, because shortness of breath during sleep leads to a lack of oxygen in the body, and then an irregular heartbeat and stroke.
4- High blood pressure
Elderly people must control blood pressure, because a sharp increase in blood pressure poses a major risk to cardiovascular health, as it leads to an accelerated heartbeat.

– shortness of breath.
– Dizziness.

– Unconsciousness.

Treating rapid heartbeat in the elderly
Treatment for rapid heartbeat consists of the following procedures:
– Take anti-clotting medications, but they must be obtained under the supervision of a doctor, because they may increase the risk of bleeding.
– Taking antiarrhythmic medications.
– Closure of the left atrial appendage percutaneously instead of taking anticoagulants.
– Catheter ablation: The doctor resorts to this procedure if drug therapy does not help in treating atrial fibrillation.
