The growing amount of e-waste is creating serious environmental problems, and for sustainable e-waste management solutions to be effective, consumers need to be aware of the importance of disposing of their devices correctly. A survey commissioned by Samsung from MindMiners and released in November 2022, shows that 94% of Brazilians consider the habit of recycling to be important, and 62% who have already incorporated the habit of separating waste also correctly dispose of electronic products for recycling.
However, only 3% of electronic waste produced in Latin America is disposed of correctly – the remaining 97% is not monitored, according to recent data from the United Nations (UN). Brazil is the fifth largest producer of electronic waste in the world. In this scenario, the launch of the Samsung Eco Troca reverse logistics program, in early 2023, is yet another effort by one of the industry leaders to publicize and encourage an extremely important initiative that aims to reduce the impacts of incorrect electronics disposal in the environment and promote the circular economy.
In practice, the Samsung Eco Troca program gives consumers the possibility to exchange their equipment – TVs, appliances, monitors and air conditioning models of any brand and in any condition – for a discount coupon when purchasing a new product from the brand. In support of this initiative, a special campaign with two videos (a 60-length version and a shorter 30-second version) is running on Samsung’s digital channels, in addition to on pay TV, and offers information on how the consumer can dispose of their products quickly, easily and safely.
And the advantages of correctly disposing of electronics go beyond individual gain: refrigerators, TVs and various other old products can be very useful to industry, even if they no longer work. Parts that make up the product can be reused in the manufacture of other parts and components. Recycling, therefore, makes it possible to keep inputs in constant use by reinserting components into the production chain. The incorrect disposal of equipment creates a real chance of compromising the security of user data, such as access to applications and passwords saved in the operating system, since there is no way of knowing its final destination.
The efficient implementation of reverse logistics and the correct disposal of electronics represent a fundamental step to ensure progress in sustainability initiatives in Brazil. With growing awareness of the negative impacts of improper disposal, businesses and consumers will increasingly adopt responsible practices to mitigate damage to the environment. With continued efforts, the Brazilian industry can exploit its immense potential to become a role model.
