A recent study shows that consuming drinks with artificial sweeteners can increase the risk of atrial fibrillation or a condition in which the heartbeat is irregular.
Reporting from Medical Daily, Tuesday (16/4), atrial fibrillation can cause blood clots in the heart and increase the risk of stroke, heart failure and other heart diseases.
According to the United States (US) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as many as 12.1 million people in ‘Uncle Sam’s country’ will experience atrial fibrillation in 2030.
According to research results published in the journal of the American Heart Association, regularly consuming 2 liters or more of artificially sweetened drinks a week increases the risk of heart problems by up to 20%.
The study, which examined 200,000 adults’ diet and genetic data from UK Biobank, found 9,362 participants showed symptoms of atrial fibrillation in ten years.
Head of the research team, Ningjian Wang, explained that someone who consumes 2 liters of artificially sweetened drinks per week has a 10% risk of atrial fibrillation compared to those who do not consume these drinks.

“This figure can rise to 20% for people who consume more than 2 liters of artificially sweetened drinks per week,” said Ningjian.
Therefore, Ningjian recommends reducing or even avoiding drinks that contain artificial sweeteners.
“This does not mean that drinking drinks with artificial sweeteners that are low in sugar and low in calories is healthier, these drinks also have risks to body health,” concluded Ningjian. (Ant/Z-1)
