The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) risks replicating the mistakes made by the tech industry at the dawn of the social media era, Microsoft chairman Brad Smith warned at a business forum in New Delhi on Friday, according to AFP.

The tech industry had “become a bit too euphoric regarding all the good things social media was going to bring to the world – and there were a lot – without thinking regarding the risks,” Smith told B20 (Business 20), which brings together industry players private for three days, before the G20.

“We have to be clear-minded, we have to be excited regarding the possibilities offered to us, but at the same time we have to think regarding the disadvantages, even worry regarding them. And we have to build the protection measures from the beginning”, he warned.

AI is causing growing concern around the world because this technology can be used for evil purposes. As with “deepfake” videos that make people say things they didn’t say.

“The public wants this new technology to remain under human control”

Technology, which promises to revolutionize a wide range of professions, also raises the fear among many workers that their profession will transform or disappear.

According to a study published by the UN on Monday, artificial intelligence is more likely to create jobs than destroy them, but will lead to potential changes in the quality of jobs, including work intensity and autonomy.

The study also points out that the effects of this new technology vary considerably depending on occupations and fields, with women being more likely than men to have their work affected.
