Artificial intelligence in architecture: what changes in the development of architectural projects for companies

As it already happens in several other professions, the use of artificial intelligence has been consolidating itself as a trend that promises to revolutionize the future of architecture in the coming decades. This technology has proven to be very useful in offering alternatives with speed, accuracy and customization for projects. AI tools bring greater agility to carry out tasks, being able to anticipate possibilities by organizing a huge volume of information while presenting solutions, optimizing processes that took much longer when executed manually by architects

AI brings alternatives with speed, precision and customization, but technology must be auxiliary and requires rational use so as not to limit the architect’s creativity

With a constant evolution of its tools, AI has been helping to simplify the definitions of project conceptions through simulations, for example, in two or three dimensions, which allows the visualization, already in the initial stage of the plan of a construction or of a renovation, the best possible choices for buildings and furniture arrangements in spaces. And, today, there are softwares with artificial intelligence that can convert 2D files into 3D BIM (Building Information Modeling), in just a few seconds of processing, using only a photo of the plan of a project, which will become displayed in detail in three-dimensional format. To top it all off, BIM (Building Information Modeling) goes far beyond that by providing a digital model of a building that contains a series of data related to elements such as materials used, structures, thermal characteristics, energy consumption, systems, costs, safety and security. maintenance.

Artificial intelligence tools are helping to optimize and streamline architectural projects.

There are other AI platforms that are also being used by architects, engineers and interior designers, which use the concept of transforming text into an image, in which the operator of the tool writes what he wants to be generated to visualize in a project. And these software with artificial intelligence allow this to happen through commands that can be given easily, without the help of computer programs to promote adjustments.

However, artificial intelligence is still seen in architecture with some caution, because, although it provides undeniably useful actions, it must be used as an auxiliary tool, in a rational way, so as not to limit the creativity of architects, whose work is irreplaceable. Especially because the successful application of AI depends on well-targeted human guidance.

Architect Denise Moraes, director of creation and concept at AKMX Arquitetura e Engenharia, a company with 20 years of experience in the corporate and business market, recognizes the importance of artificial intelligence as an ally for professionals, but emphasizes that experience and architect’s knowledge to understand what are the needs of the places and design possibilities that are most suitable for the users of the buildings that will be built or renovated.

“Artificial intelligence is a useful tool, but as an element to help the architect, whose expertise and efficiency as a professional are the most important factors for the planning and execution of a successful project”, says Denise, remembering that creativity it is one of the essences of the profession, and the quality of the architect needs to be valued in the foreground.

“New work routines can always be optimized with technologies that appear all the time, but there will never be a ready-made recipe in architecture. The architect will always play an indispensable role, even if artificial intelligence continues to advance significantly”, he adds.

negative addictions

The researcher and architect Vinícius Juliani Pereira warns, in his master’s thesis from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU) of USP, with the title “Digital alterity in the design process: study on the interaction between architect and artificial intelligence”, published in 2021, that the use of AI in an increasingly autonomous way can produce negative biases during project design. The professional emphasizes that, when making decisions or helping in the process of choosing decisions, technologies can produce biased results. To complete, Pereira also sees the risk of the extreme use of this technology being harmful to professionals from the moment it ceases to be an auxiliary to replace human work.

The evolution of AI

“We live in what appears to be a borderline period, in which electronic interfaces may no longer present an inanimate behavior and start interacting with humans as another being, digital and intelligent”, highlighted Pereira in the summary of his thesis, in which he also warned about the dangerous consequences of companies placing more value on software than on architectural professionals when executing their projects. The researcher emphasizes that it is necessary to have a balanced interaction between man and machine so that technology can be controlled and not become the dominant part of the processes. The architect also points out that it is necessary to know when the potential of a technology is over, so as not to become a hostage of a company or a conglomerate of companies that develops software.
