“Artificial Intelligence Identifies ‘Unknown Primitive’ Cancers: Wilfrid’s Story”

If you browse The Parisian this morning, you will discover Wilfrid’s story: In 2019, following an epileptic seizure, the 50-year-old was diagnosed with two brain tumors; he is not given more than three weeks to live. After the operation, her state of health improved, but the doctors came to the conclusion that her tumors were metastases of another cancer, which they were unable to diagnose.

According to Sarah Watson, of the Institut Curie: “Unknown primitives are cancers with a very poor prognosis, with a median survival at the time of diagnosis of six to ten months. […] Patients are often treated with broad-spectrum chemotherapy that will hit all over the place. But it works badly.”

To remedy this, the scientist has developed, with her team, an artificial intelligence capable of detecting a patient’s cancer in a few minutes. She then wondered if the machine might work on so-called cancers. “unknown primitives”. The answer is yes, since before Wilfrid, 150 patients in the same case were successfully analyzed by artificial intelligence.

The 50-year-old then confronted the machine: “The computer determined 90% that my cancer was from the kidney. It was very strong, because my kidneys, already screened, show no signs of cancer. It’s like a ghost that has passed without leaving a trace”. Wilfrid then receives localized chemotherapy, which tires him out, but keeps him alive.

According to Sarah Watson, 60% of patients diagnosed by the computer are still alive ten months later, nearly three times the median.
