An Artificial Intelligence created by scientists at Osaka Metropolitan University, Japan, was able to detect heart disease with high precision. The study was published in the scientific journal The Lancet Digital Health this week.

According to the report, researchers created a model that uses AI to classify heart function and valve disease using chest X-rays. The intention would be to take advantage of the resource as a supplement to echocardiography and show how Artificial Intelligence can be used in the health area.

To achieve high accuracy, the scientists used multi-institutional data. The training included 22,551 radiographs collected, linked to 22,551 echocardiograms of 16,946 patients, between the years 2013 and 2021. The radiographs were classified as input data, while the echocardiograms remained as output information.

By learning to connect the two groups, the AI model was able to accurately divide six types of valvular heart disease, with Area Under the Curve (AUC), by ranges from 0.83 to 0.92 – the closer to 1.0, the better .

“It took us a long time to arrive at these results, but I believe this is significant research. In addition to improving the diagnostic efficiency of doctors, the system can also be used in areas where there are no specialists, in night emergencies and for patients who have difficulty doing echocardiography.”

Despite the potential of the tool, the World Health Organization (WHO) still has some objections to the use of this AI. In the organ’s view, it is necessary to be careful in the implementation of this type of technology, which “protect and promise human well-being, security and autonomy” as priorities.

In Brazil, the secretary of Digital Health of the Ministry of Health, Ana Estela Haddad, has already stated that the portfolio evaluates how Artificial Intelligence can benefit the SUS.
