Artificial intelligence has compiled a map of car “hot spots” that people find most attractive
Trial and error is one way to find out how successful a car design will be. Failure in this matter can seriously damage the business and lead to serious losses. That’s why manufacturers develop concept cars, testing the public’s reaction before putting them into production. Some models never leave the drawing board, others never make it beyond the clay model.

These days, artificial intelligence is no longer the subject of only science fiction films or books. People use it to create texts, photos and videos. Some fear that it might spell doom for us all, while others recognize its potential to greatly improve our lives in the future.
Vanarama recently conducted a very interesting study using eye tracking software. The goal is to map car hot spots and rank 100 cars from most attractive to least attractive. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but whoever said that probably didn’t foresee how modern technology would develop. So how can AI determine what a person likes most regarding a car? The answer may sound like something from Asimov’s work: “This artificial intelligence program uses a sophisticated deep learning algorithm that can interpret designs and images.”

Extensive datasets including 70,000 images were used for training. As a result, the AI generates heat maps for eye tracking with an impressive accuracy ranging from 90 to 96%. Vanarama uploaded 200 images of the 100 most popular cars into the computer, providing angles from both the front and rear. After analyzing the data, the software generated heat maps showing the most visually appealing parts of each vehicle.
In recent years, we have repeatedly faced criticism of BMW’s huge radiator grille. What if BMW designers went this route to play on the contradiction? After all, their task was to create a car that people would talk regarding.
According to Vanarama’s research, the grille ranks third on the list with a score of 19.7%. So what other parts of the car intuitively attract the most attention?

It turned out that people look at the back of the car in more detail than the front. The taillights occupy an average of 27.3% of the spotlight, while the trunk and rear window receive just 20.5% of attention. Wheels performed slightly better than headlights, while doors outperformed mirrors. As expected, the results were slightly different among minivans, with the grille being the main point of interest, according to the study.
The most attractive cars
Artificial intelligence that tracks the direction of gaze determined that one of the most attractive cars was the Hyundai i20. It takes second place, and Kia Soul is third. The Volkswagen ID4 took fourth place, level with the Mercedes-Benz GLE. But the AI awarded first place to Renault Captur.

The Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace took home the award for best grille by a large margin over the Skoda Kodiaq and Jeep Compass. The VW ID3 barely won the best wheel award, losing out to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E. The software liked the taillights of the Kia Soul more than those of the Hyundai i20 and Honda HR-V.
Least attractive cars
Tesla fans, take note: The Model 3 scored the lowest in the desirability study. Cars such as the Skoda Octavia, Dacia Duster (worst headlights) and Renault Clio also performed poorly. According to the study, the Hyundai Kona has the worst grille of all, while the Jeep Renegade has the worst wheels.
Meanwhile, the podium with the worst rear lights is shared by the Nissan X-Trail and two Toyotas (RAV4 and Aygo).

The winner here is the Volkswagen Transporter. Renault Master and Vauxhall Vivaro are almost equal in terms of performance. At the same time, their level of attractiveness is higher than that of the BMW X5 or Volvo XC90. Volkswagen is on the rise: the ID Buzz has the best-looking wheels, and the Caddy takes second place in the ranking of the best-looking commercial vehicles. Renault wins the Best Grille and Best Tail Light categories thanks to Kangoo and Master.
