Launched less than a year ago, the Artifacta social news network created by the same creators as Instagram, is being closed. The information was published today on Medium by the software CEO, Kevin Systromand was received with lament by platform users.
The closure of the app’s operations, according to him, is due to the conclusion that the market is not large enough to continue with the investment — at least in its current form: “Often, making the difficult decision sooner is better for everyone those involved,” he said.
The text also indicates that those responsible for Artifact will continue to invest in new ideas: “We live in an exciting time when artificial intelligence is changing almost everything we touch and the opportunities for new ideas seem limitless,” said Systrom.
Out of respect for users, Artifact will be phased out. In a first step, already in effect, the ability to add new comments and publications was removed — although existing posts will still remain active in each user’s profile view.
The app’s main functionality, which is reading news, will remain available until the end of Februarywhen the software should be closed for good: “We are optimistic regarding the future and want to thank our community for being part of this adventure”, concluded Systrom.
In the comments of the publication, some users lamented the end of Artifact, even highlighting that they would pay to help keep it standing. Another, in turn, suggested that the creators turn it into open source software — which would allow the community to contribute new ideas.
