Artemy extended his scoring streak to 13 matches and helped the Rangers beat Minnesota.

Artemi Panarin is having the best start to the season of his career and continues to chase serious achievements. He extended his hitting streak to 13 games against Minnesota and is on pace to become the Rangers’ most consistent player ever.

In addition, the striker is still hunting for first place in the list of top scorers and is capable of breaking a unique record that has stood for almost 18 years.

Panarin solves Rangers problems

If any Rangers fans were against the appointment of Peter Laviolette, they are unlikely to admit it now. Under the leadership of the new coach, the Blueshirts had one of the best starts to the season in history: for only the second time in its existence, the New York club won 8 out of 10 starting matches.

At the same time, the Laviolette team is fighting with Boston for leadership in the East without key players: Adam Fox, Igor Shesterkin and Filip Hytil are on the injured list. Panarin’s phenomenal performance helps keep the Rangers at the top of the conference. The Russian contributes to literally every aspect of the team’s game.

Firstly, after the appointment of Laviolette, Panarin began to threaten the goal more often. This was reflected in the number of goals he scored in even strength situations. He lit the red light six times in the 5-on-5 format and only scored once on the power play. In addition, the Russian’s desire to improve his sniper statistics did not affect his skills as a brilliant playmaker.

He had eight assists as a member of the first special teams team and, along with Chris Kreider, made the Rangers one of the most dangerous teams in the league on the power play.

Panarin is one step away from the record

And no matter what difficulties the Laviolette team had, Panarin showed that they can rely on him. But the Rangers’ problems are not over yet: before the match with Minnesota, Shestyorkin’s replacement, Jonathan Quick, was injured. The vacant place in goal was filled by Louis Domingue, who spent his entire career wandering around the NHL and AHL.

His teammates helped Dominga ease into his first home game at Madison Square Garden, allowing his opponents only two shots on target in the entire first period. And Vincent Trocheck put the Rangers ahead by opening the scoring in the 4th minute.

After the break, the head coach factor came into play again: even before the season, journalists noted that Laviolette was able to force his players to give 100%.

So Domingue, who played his first match with the Rangers, missed one goal in 40 minutes of the meeting after 17 shots on target.

The hosts were able to take the lead again only at the beginning of the third period. Panarin’s line organized a counterattack in the “3 on 2” format, and the Russian himself eliminated two opponents with a feint and made a great pass to Alexis Lafreniere. Thus, from the start of the regular season, Artemy has been scoring points in 13 matches in a row, which is the second result in Rangers history. The leadership in this indicator is still retained by Rod Gilbert, who was on the scoresheet for 14 matches in a row in the 1972/73 season.

The absolute league record is held by Dany Heatley, who scored points in 22 consecutive matches in the 2005/06 season. In the modern NHL, it seems crazy to aim for such an achievement, but, maintaining his current form, Panarin is capable of doing it.

After the second goal, Minnesota fell apart. The morale of the “savages” was affected by the sending off received in the middle of the final 20 minutes. The guests almost held back the opponent’s onslaught, but conceded a second before the fifth field player came out.

At the end of the match, Minnesota tried to save itself, and as soon as the game moved into the attack zone, the visiting keeper ran to the bench. Kirill Kaprizov’s team almost managed to reduce the gap to a minimum, but Domingue made several cool saves, and then Panarin scored his 8th goal of the season with an accurate shot from the middle zone. Now the forward has 22 points after 13 matches. To get to first place in the list of top scorers, he only needs to overtake Nikita Kucherov (23) and Elias Pettersson (24).

But things are not going so well for the Russian from Minnesota. Kaprizov spent almost 20 minutes on the ice at Madison Square Garden, but was unable to score points. In addition, he landed only two shots, performed one power move, committed a turnover, and ended the match with a negative utility score of -2.
