The King Abdullah Center for World Culture in Saudi Arabia (ITRA), a cultural initiative by Saudi Aramco, offers a comprehensive dive into Islamic arts through “Smashing the Mosque: The Art of Orientation.” It displays what is considered the largest collection of Islamic art in the kingdom, and is currently curated in the Etra Museum (Gallery 3), which recently conducted a guided tour during the first week of July. The exhibition will be on display throughout the year.

The Art of Orientation focuses on mosques in the region, but particularly on their history, functions, interiors, and objects. With themes of “aesthetics”, “sophistication” and “functionality”, it is used to introduce both locals and tourists to the world of Islamic heritage by presenting the largest collection of Islamic arts and crafts from around the world. This includes works that trace their origins back to both the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in the country.

Examples of relics displayed during the guided tour include minbars, sword niches, calligraphic works, prayer rugs, mosque lamps, and Qur’anic manuscripts. In addition, mosque models from around the world were on display, with buildings from Indonesia, China, Mali, Syria, Iraq, Uzbekistan, Egypt and the country’s original Al-Masjid an-Nabawi.

In all, the exhibition included 84 works from the Museum of Islamic Arts in Cairo, which is run by the Supreme Council of Egyptian Antiquities, and 34 artifacts from its private collection. Visitors can also explore Saudi Arabia’s mosques using five virtual reality (VR) tracks, including the two holy mosques in Mecca and Medina.

Founded in 2018, etra has served as a cultural and creative destination for the development of intercultural talent and expertise. In addition to the museum, other facilities include a children’s museum, theatre, cinema, library, and many more.
