Art Genève 2022: Controversial Director, International Galleries, and Criminal Investigations

The 12th edition of Art Genève is currently taking place with around 80 galleries. While sales are going well, negative headlines surrounding the ex-director and founder Thomas Hug are a topic of conversation at the art fair.

“We all feel like we’ve been tricked,” explains a Geneva museum man flatly. Thomas Hug is also accused of theft. Hug founded Art Genève in 2012 as a small Salon d’Art with a mixture of applied and fine art. Now successfully established as an international art fair, the 12th edition has just opened with around 80 international galleries. One of the highlights is the miniature “Art Unlimited” featuring Joana Vasconcelos’ oversized fabric sculpture hanging from the ceiling.

Responsible for the current edition is Charlotte Diwan, the fair’s new director, who took over the management of Art Genève from Thomas Hug just a few months before the opening. Four Austrian galleries are also represented: Christine König, Krobath, Thaddaeus Ropac and Eva Presenhuber, who has had a Vienna branch once more since 2022.

Criminal investigations are ongoing
