Art Garfunkel Reflects on Touching Reunion with Paul Simon After Years of Estrangement
Legendary folk singer Art Garfunkel recently opened up about his relationship with former musical partner Paul Simon, revealing a heartwarming reunion after years of distance.
During a recent appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark, the 83-year-old icon candidly addressed the question that seems to follow him everywhere: will he and Simon ever reconnect?
“This is the question they always ask me about that," Garfunkel shared. "I can’t speak for him. It’s really his life. I know we met up recently for the first time in years. We had a period of estrangement for some years until — he has a son that moved into the place that I live in, and I knew I was going to run into Harper [Simon]. Harper set up a dinner, and Paul and I hung out, first time in years. And it was very touching.”
This reunion, Garfunkel explained, wasn’t just recent news, but a significant reconciliation after a period of separation between the two musical giants. Speaking earlier in November to The Times, Garfunkel elaborated: “First time we’d been together in many years,” he said, recalling their meeting earlier that fall. “I looked at Paul and said, ‘What happened? Why haven’t we seen each other?’ Paul mentioned an old interview where I said some stuff.”
The renowned duo, known for their captivating harmonies and timeless hits like "Bridge Over Troubled Water," achieved incredible success between 1964 and 1970, releasing five studio albums. However, despite their musical prowess, their relationship has remained famously strained, marked by periods of estrangement and infrequent reunions.
Their iconic 1981 benefit concert in New York City’s Central Park stands as a testament to their enduring legacy, a brief yet powerful reminder of the magic they created together.
While the future of their relationship remains unclear, Garfunkel’s words offer a glimmer of hope. The recent reunion, facilitated by their sons’ proximity, suggests a willingness to move forward and mend the dynamic that brought them such artistic success. At its core, their story resonates with the complexities of relationships, the challenges of fame, and the enduring power of shared history.
