Five days following Nahel’s death, urban violence continued across France. But the Var department was once once more relatively spared from the overflows last night.
The awakening was however brutal this Sunday for the Carqueirannais who live near the parking lot of La Liberation. Two municipal police crew vehicles that were parked in their reserved space were set on fire. The fire quickly spread to a third privately owned vehicle.
The rapid intervention of firefighters from the Hyères fire and rescue center quickly extinguished the disaster. But according to the first elements of the investigation carried out by the national police of the Hyères police station, the origin would be criminal. Clues noted on the spot confirm the use of a molotov cocktail.
Fortunately, the building near the municipal police was not affected and no injuries are to be deplored. On site from the first hours of this arson, the mayor, Arnaud Latil, “would lean more towards a deliberate isolated act of an individual.” “But only the investigation will determine it or not”he said, while saluting “the support received by the calls of the public prosecutor, the departmental director of public security and the police officers of the Hyères police station and the president of the Metropolis.”
The solidarity gesture of the city of Hyères
“I hope that the author of this fire will be arrested and judged as a result of these serious facts with extreme severity”, commented the first magistrate. He wanted to thank the gesture of solidarity shown this Sunday morning by the mayor of Hyères, Jean-Pierre Giran. “He is loaning us a vehicle screen-printed in the colors of the police forces which will allow us, from this Monday, to be operational to ensure the continuity of the public service mission”, underlined the mayor, Arnaud Latil.
The vigilance of the police remains strong in all the municipalities of the Metropolis, in particular in Seyne-sur-Mer. During the night of Saturday, no arrests related to acts of degradation took place, only two garbage containers were set on fire in the Berthe city.
The night was also calm on the side of the city La Gabelle in Fréjus, where no arrests took place.
