A student who set fire to the only abortion clinic in Wyoming, a western US state, was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison, several American media reported.

Lorna Roxanne Green, 22, admitted to breaking into the Wellspring Health Access clinic in Casper in May 2022 and spilling gasoline there. The inauguration of the clinic was planned a few weeks later.

According to court documents consulted by the local newspaper Oil City Newsshe told the police “that she did not like abortion and had nightmares which she attributed to her anxiety regarding the opening of the abortion clinic”.

“She then decided to burn the building down,” the documents state.

The opening of the clinic was delayed for several weeks due to the damage, making access to abortion in Wyoming even more difficult.

Abortion remains legal in this conservative state, but Republican elected officials have tried to restrict it since the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States in June 2022 to overturn the constitutional protection of abortion.

In the months that followed, many conservative states implemented restrictions, up to total bans.
