Arson at Kaporo market? “They often come to set fire here”

A fire occurred on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at the Kaporo market, in the town of Ratoma (Conakry). The fire consumed several stalls and affected part of a mosque located inside the market. According to testimonies collected on the spot by a journalist from Guineematin.com, this fire would be of criminal origin.

The fire broke out around 3 a.m. He ravaged 14 tables belonging to vegetable sellers and the goods that were there. Hawa Barry, one of the victims, maintains that the repetitive fires in this part of the Kaporo market are caused by malicious people.

“I lost my merchandise, consisting of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and others. Many of my seller friends also suffered losses. This is not the first time that there have been arson attacks at this part of the market. They often come to set fire here, ”lamented this saleswoman.

In addition to the stalls, the fire also affected a mosque located inside the market. “At the level of the mosque, there is a part of the ceiling which burned with the rfollowings, certain sheets were disheveled because the rfollowings were consumed. Much of the main reentry was also damaged.

The young people came to the rescue, they were able to get the carpets out in time because if they had caught fire, it would be more serious,” said Elhadj Mamadou Saïdou Diallo, member of the mosque council. “We are asking goodwill to help us repair the damaged parts so that we can pray there during the month of Ramadan,” he said.

The theory of arson is also supported by the market administrator. Faced with this situation, Mamadou Saïdou Barry announces security measures. “We will take our responsibilities in relation to this situation to secure the market. We have a guard here who is used to closing and opening the gates, but we will take measures to safeguard the vendors and their belongings,” he promised.
