Arslanbek Makhmudov acquitted himself in brilliant fashion in what was to be his biggest challenge of his career so far on Saturday night when he outplayed Nigerian Raphael Akpejiori in Toledo, Ohio.
It was a first fight against an undefeated opponent for Makhmudov (17-0, 16 KOs), who is the NABF heavyweight champion.
From the first engagement, Akpejiori barely survived a thunderous end of the round from Makhmudov, who shook him with two hooks from the right.
As soon as the bell sounded to announce the start of the second round, Makhmudov re-established his great dominance, quickly forcing the official to end the carnage at 1:43.
Akpejiori (15-1, 14 KOs) is a six-foot-eight giant who had defeated three of his last four opponents in the first round.
The two pugilists would face each other in the semi-finals of the gala led by two other heavyweights, Jared Anderson (14-0, 14 KOs) and Charles Martin (29-3-1, 26 KOs) .
