Arshad Nadeem’s gold medal ended Pakistan’s 32-year medal drought

Pakistan’s 32-year medal drought at the Olympic Games ended when Arshad Nadeem won gold in the men’s javelin throw at the Paris Olympics on Thursday night.

Pakistan has not won a medal at the Olympics since 1992, while it last won a gold medal 40 years ago.

In Paris, Arshad was Pakistan’s last hope to win a medal as the rest of Pakistan’s athletes were eliminated in the early rounds of various events.

Arshad’s throw in the first round of the men’s javelin final today was disallowed. After failing in the first round, he not only made a great comeback by throwing 92.97 meters at a speed of 110.0 kmph, but also set a new record in the Olympics.

His throw in the third round was 88.72 meters. The speed of this throw was 104.70 km per hour.

In the fourth round, his throws did not have much life. He was able to throw at a speed of 105.30 kmph, with a reach of 79.40 meters.

In the fifth round, Arshad’s throw was 84.87 meters. The speed of the throw this time was 105.10 kmph.

India’s top javelin athlete Neeraj Chopra performed very poorly today. His first, third, fourth and fifth throws were disallowed for crossing the toe line.

In the second round, however, he had a good throw of 89.45 meters, which earned him the silver medal. The bronze medal went to Anderson Peters of Grenada.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif congratulated Arshad on X and wrote that he has made the entire nation proud.

This was Arshad’s second consecutive final at the Olympics. Earlier in the Tokyo Olympics, he was at the fifth position.

However, in the 2023 World Athletics Championships, he failed to defeat India’s Neeraj Chopra and bagged the silver medal.
