Arsenal did not lose track of Manchester City in the Premier League title bid after beating Newcastle 2-0 on Sunday.
Martin Odegaard’s first-half goal and Fabian Schar’s own goal, as well as several interventions by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, allowed Arsenal to emerge triumphant from the most difficult test of their last four games, taking a rare victory for an away in the St. James’ Park.
Arsenal was one point behind City, who have one game less played but face several demanding commitments in the final stretch of the season. Pep Guardiola’s team seeks to win its third title in a row in the English league.
Odegaard put Arsenal ahead after 14 minutes with a low shot from outside the area that capped off a counterattack.
Newcastle, third in the table, threatened early on with a shot from Jacob Murphy that hit the post. A penalty was also indicated in his favor, but the decision was reversed after the intervention of the VAR.
Before Schar’s own goal in the 71st, Ramsdale went out of their way to block point-blank shots from Joe Willock and Schar. Alexander Isak slammed a shot against the post for a Newcastle who attacked with everything.

In their remaining matches, the Gunners will host Brighton, visit Nottingham Forest and close at home against Wolverhampton. City have a somewhat more complicated calendar on paper: visiting Everton, at home against Chelsea and expeditions to Brighton and Brentford.
Arsenal are trying to win their first league title since 2004.
Newcastle remained three points ahead of fifth Liverpool and with one game less, in the fight for qualification for the next Champions League.
