United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres arrived in Dakar on Saturday evening for the first leg of his Ramadan solidarity visit to West Africa.
The UN leader will travel to Niger on Monday and then to Nigeria, the final stage of his visit.
On the menu of his stay in Dakar, an audience on Sunday with Senegalese President Macky Sall, who is also the current chairman of the African Union (AU), said a UN press release.
He will also visit the UN headquarters for West Africa under construction in the town of Diamniadio (30 km from Dakar) as well as the site of the vaccine production plant of the Pasteur Institute in the same locality.
“He will also participate in Eid Al-Fitr celebrations with the President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, and he is expected to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria,” the statement said, noting that the impacts of the war in Ukraine on the African continent will be on the menu of discussions with the three leaders.
The Secretary General will also meet with senior government officials as well as representatives of civil society as well as families affected by violence and instability in the Sahel, including internally displaced persons and refugees.
“Guterres will also assess the impact of climate change on vulnerable communities and assess progress and challenges in recovering from COVID-19,” the document said.
