Arrests Made for Severe Damage to Great Wall: Covering Hole Created for Heavy Machinery

Chinese police have arrested two people for causing serious damage to a section of the Great Wall by opening a hole in its structure so that heavy machinery might pass through, state television CCTV reported on Tuesday.

The suspects, identified by their surnames Zheng and Wang, are two construction workers who, according to the police investigation, used an excavator to dig a large hole in one of the sections of the wall in the central province of Shanxi in order to to facilitate the passage of your machinery.

Photos released by the Youyu County Public Security Bureau showed missing parts and a dirt road running through a section of the wall, located near the city of Shuozhou.

The incident occurred on August 24 in the section called “32”, which is part of the Great Wall built during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and which owes its name to its status as the 32nd surveillance post to be lies in the territory of Youyu County. It is a very old section of the Wall and of great archaeological value, which is why it is considered part of the cultural heritage of the province.

The police received a complaint regarding the fact and went to the place, where they found evidence that the wall had been destroyed by a heavy machine.

After tracking them down, the agents located the two suspects in a neighboring town, a man and a woman, aged 38 and 55 respectively, and took them to the police station for questioning, following which they confessed to having damaged the structure to “save time and distance.

The Youyu County Public Security Department detailed that the suspects used the bulldozer to make a “big hole” in the wall, causing “irreversible damage to the integrity” of the monument.

The Great Wall of China is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of the oldest parts of the wall are over 2,000 years old. The structure is a testament to the achievements of ancient human engineering.
