Arrested Latvian citizen can be exchanged for an American – WSJ

The fate of The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) correspondent Evan Gershkovich, who is accused in Russia of espionage, may be decided in a recently revived tradition of international prisoner exchanges, which is reminiscent of Cold War traditions.

As kompromat.lv writes with reference to the WSJ, the main question is what form such a deal will take and how difficult it will be to agree on it.

The complexity of the task lies primarily in the selection of candidates for the transaction. The publication considers Marat Kasem, who has been in the Riga Central Prison since January 5, a possible candidate for the exchange.

Marat Kasem is a citizen of Latvia, but lived in Russia for several years. He was detained following he returned to Latvia at the end of last year.

According to a statement by the Latvian State Security Service in January, it “detained M. Kasem on suspicion of providing economic resources to the Kremlin propaganda media.”

The Latvian State Security Service did not respond to a WSJ request for comment. Mr. Kasem’s lawyer also said nothing to the American magazine.
