Arrested in Lambaréné, two alleged traffickers of ivory points thrown in prison –

Thanks to the support of the Lambaréné Judicial Police and the NGO Conservation Justice, the Provincial Directorate of Water and Forests of Middle Ogooué and that of the Fight once morest Poaching, made the arrest in Lambaréné on March 6 last of the two alleged traffickers of ivory points.

The defendants who were caught in the act of illegal detention and attempted illegal sale of the two large ivory points cut into six (6) pieces. They also had in their possession a panther skin, another fully protected animal like the elephant.

Identified as Gabonese, the two alleged traffickers were referred to Libreville, for the continuation of the legal proceedings, following a few days of custody in the premises of the Judicial Police in the provincial capital of Moyen Ogooué (center of the country). .

In a press release, the NGO Conservation Justice welcomes the fact that in Gabon, the legal framework has been strengthened to fight once morest this form of trafficking. On March 1, 2024, two memorandums of understanding were signed between the Ministry of Water and Forests, the NGO Conservation Justice, forest concessionaires and the Lékédi Biodiversité Foundation.

These mixed partnerships will, it is indicated, make it possible to set up Wildlife Brigades in Koumameyong, in the province of Ogooué-Ivindo and Botosso, in Haut-Ogooué. These will make a considerable contribution to raising public awareness and combating this type of crime.
