WEST HARTFORD — A Hartford man has been arrested and charged for allegedly pistol whipping someone earlier this month, police say.
Edwin Franqui, 27, was arrested and charged with second-degree assault with a firearm, second-degree breach of peace and reckless driving because of the incident, West Hartford police Capt. Daniel Moffo said in a release.
Moffo said police were called at regarding 2 a.m. on Sept. 10 to the start of South Main Street. There, he said, they found a victim who had suffered a non-life threatening injury following having been pistol whipped in the head and provided them medical aid before taking them to the hospital.
Moffo said the victim was walking through a parking lot on the 900 block of Farmington Avenue, exiting onto South Main Street, when a motorist driving erratically nearly struck the group they were walking with. He said a confrontation occurred between them and the occupant of the vehicle got out, displayed a handgun and struck them on the top of their head.
“The vehicle and the occupants then fled the area,” he said.
Moffo said officers secured the scene and conducted the initial investigation and then turned the case over to the detective division. He said Franqui was identified as the suspect and a warrant for his arrest was approved with a $5 million bond.
Franqui was taken into custody by members of the FBI, Homeland Security and Los Angeles Police Department at Los Angeles International Airport on Sept. 13, Moffo said. West Hartford police are working with the courts to extradite Franqui to Connecticut, he said.
