Arrested for crashing and causing death of Hispanic driver

As a result of an unfortunate collision with another vehicle, an elderly man was arrested Monday by police in Prince William County, Virginia.

Paul Leon Reece, 87, faces charges for failing to stop or yield to another driver before entering a busy highway, a moving violation, as required by regulation.

The fatal victim of this unfortunate event was identified as Williams Ely Monge Rodríguez, a 31-year-old worker of Honduran nationality.

The fatal accident occurred just before 6:15 am in the area of ​​Sudley Road and Stepney Drive in the Gainesville area of ​​Manassas.

Initial investigations by detectives with the Prince William Crash Investigation Unit determined that Reece, who was driving a 2019 Cadillac XT4, made a left turn from Stepney Drive onto Sudley Road as a 1998 Toyota Corolla was traveling west. by this last avenue, which is the preferred route. The driver of the Cadillac should have stopped and yielded to the other vehicle, but he did not, according to police.

Monge, who was driving the Toyota, tried to avoid the collision, but was hit hard by the Cadillac. Monge’s car spun violently before being hit by a third car, according to a police report.

Monge Rodríguez was taken to an area hospital where he died of his serious injuries. The unidentified driver of the third car was also injured and is expected to survive.

Reece, and an unidentified 85-year-old female passenger, who were in the Cadillac, were not injured in the accident.

Hours later, the Honduran community and other nationalities mobilized to participate in a fundraising campaign, destined to repatriate Monge’s remains to Honduras. In his homeland he will be buried by his relatives, who were very saddened by the unfortunate news.

For this purpose, relatives of the victim opened a GoFundMe account to cover expenses related to this tragedy, estimated at $5,000.
