Mr. Kim (67), a suspect for whom an arrest warrant was requested for stabbing Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, with a weapon, appeared at the Busan District Court on the 4th to be interrogated (substantive warrant review) before arrest.
Mr. Kim left the Yeonje Police Station detention center in Yeonje-gu, Busan at around 1:20 PM on this day and arrived at the Busan District Prosecutor’s Office in Yeonje-gu in a convoy vehicle. Mr. Kim broke his silence when asked by reporters, “Why did you stab Representative Lee?” and said, “I submitted an eight-page (eight page) statement of my excuse to the police. I would appreciate it if you could refer to it.” He subsequently did not answer questions such as “Was there someone’s instigation?” and “When did you join the Democratic Party?”
Mr. Kim was arrested on the spot at around 10:27 a.m. on the 2nd after stabbing CEO Lee on the left side of his neck with a weapon while he was walking to his car after inspecting the Daejeon Observatory, the planned site of Gadeokdo New Airport in Gangseo-gu, Busan.
The Busan Police Agency applied for an arrest warrant for Mr. Kim on charges of attempted murder to the Busan District Prosecutors’ Office at 7:35 p.m. on the 3rd, and the Busan District Prosecutors’ Office Special Investigation Team requested an arrest warrant for Mr. Kim to the Busan District Court at 11:08 p.m. The Busan District Court will begin questioning Mr. Kim as a suspect at 2 p.m. The decision on whether Kim will be arrested is expected to be announced this afternoon.
