The National Police, in a joint operation with the Colombian National Police and the United States Office of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), has arrested in Madrid the representative in Europe of the ‘Zetas’, the dangerous organization of Mexican drug traffickers who broke away from the ‘El Golfo’ cartel in 2010 and was originally made up of soldiers. This is a 54-year-old Moroccan who had inherited the position of Juan Manuel Muñoz Luévano, alias ‘Mono Muñoz’, arrested years ago and considered the link of the Mexican cartel in Europe.

A total of five people have been arrested in the operation and 400 kilograms of cocaine, 220,000 euros in cash, two vehicles, ten telephones and documentation of interest have been seized. This operation is the second major blow by the National Police once morest Mexican criminal organizations that are trying to establish themselves in our country. “International police cooperation has been essential to achieve the dismantling of the organization abroad,” says the Ministry of the Interior.

The person in charge of the ‘Zetas’ in Europe is called Saud, he is 54 years old and is of Moroccan nationality. Although he had his residence in Madrid, he was characterized by leading a nomadic life, whose constant displacements complicated the work of the research groups. This person in charge of the cartel was in charge of distributing people he trusted throughout Spain and in Europe, specifically in the Netherlands, with the aim of introducing large shipments of cocaine.

The head of the organization held a high number of meetings constantly and with different people, making it difficult for the police to determine which ones were relevant to the investigation. However, in recent months he not only increased self-protection measures, but also increased the number of these meetings, which alerted the agents, noting that he might be in the final phase of importing cocaine.

Investigators detected a meeting he had with a Colombian drug trafficker known as “el Repetido” (nicknamed like that because he is a triplet brother from a clan dedicated to drug trafficking). The suspicions were confirmed when the Police discovered that they were preparing a drug shipment of 400 kilos of cocaine. In 2014, the US government of Barack Obama described the ‘Zetas’ as a “global threat”, comparing them to the ‘Camorra’ in Italy or the ‘Yakuza’ in Japan. They are one of the most dangerous drug trafficking organizations in the world, which became famous because it beheaded its enemies.
