Nicknamed “the Brazilian Pablo Escobar”, the 60-year-old Sergio Roberto de Carvalho “was handed over to Belgium on Thursday in compliance with the highest security standards”, the police said in a press release.

On its website, it published a video on which we see his transfer under high protection from a prison in Budapest to the airport, where he boarded a plane of the Belgian army.

He had been wanted since November 2020 following the seizure in Brazil of “more than 100 million dollars belonging to the criminal organization he led”, according to the Brazilian federal police.

Since then, he was the subject of an Interpol red notice, several countries including Brazil demanding his extradition for drug trafficking, money laundering, falsification of documents and homicide in connection with organized crime.

He was finally arrested in June 2022 in Hungary.

His organization is “responsible for trafficking at least 45 tons of cocaine between 2017 and 2019”, said the Hungarian police.

To escape the authorities, he had staged his death and used at least ten different identities, for which he each time had false papers, according to the same source.
