A MAN has been arrested after using an AK rifle to open fire on Donald Trump‘s golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, US on Sunday (15/9). The former president was playing golf at the time of the incident.

Martin County Sheriff William D. Snyder said the suspect was arrested minutes after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Secret Service and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office issued a “very urgent” BOLO (be on the lookout) alert detailing a specific vehicle, license plate number and description of the occupants.

Snyder said his deputies immediately surrounded I-95 northbound, fanning out to every exit between the Palm Beach County line to the south and the St. Lucie County line to the north.

“One of my highway patrol units saw the vehicle, ran the license plate, and we pulled the vehicle over. We were able to safely stop the vehicle, and take the driver into custody,” Snyder said, as reported by VOA on Monday (9/16).

According to a source familiar with the incident, Trump was safely evacuated after the incident to his private club Mar-a-Lago, where he lives in Palm Beach.

The White House said President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, had been briefed and would continue to be updated on the ongoing investigation. The White House added that they were “relieved” that Trump was safe.

Harris, in a statement, said she was relieved Trump was safe, adding that “there is no place for violence in America. In a statement posted on X, Lindsey Graham, a Republican senator from South Carolina and one of Trump’s top allies in Congress, said he had spoken to Trump after the incident and that he appeared to be in good spirits.

‘Graham added that Trump was “one of the strongest people I have ever known,’ he wrote.

The incident prompted the U.S. Secret Service to open fire. Trump was reported safe and unharmed, and the FBI said it was investigating the shooting as an alleged assassination attempt on the Republican presidential candidate.

“The man dropped the weapon and fled in an SUV and was later arrested a short distance from the crime scene,” the officials said.

They were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The two officials said an AK-style firearm was recovered at the scene near Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. There were no reports of injuries.

The incident was the latest shocking moment in the campaign year, and came about two months after Trump was shot in an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, with a bullet grazing his ear. Just a week later, President Joe Biden withdrew from the race for a second term.

The golf course was partially closed for Trump as he played. Secret Service agents stood a few holes in front of Trump when they saw the gunman.

There are several areas around the property where golfers can be seen through the fence. Secret Service agents and officers in golf carts and ATVs typically secure the area a few holes in front of and behind Trump while he plays. Agents also typically bring armored vehicles onto the course to quickly protect Trump if there is a threat.

Trump returned to Florida this weekend from a West Coast trip that included a campaign event Friday night in Las Vegas and a fundraiser in Utah. His campaign did not say what Trump had planned for Sunday. He often spends the morning playing golf before having lunch at the club, one of three he owns in the state.

Security has been stepped up for the former president since the assassination attempt in July. When he is at Trump Tower in New York, a row of garbage trucks is parked outside the building. At outdoor rallies, he now speaks from behind a bulletproof glass barrier. (I-2)
